The Alfred University Consumer Chemistry Camp is an exciting residential summer program for students aged 14-17 who have completed 8th grade math and science. The program teaches students about the chemistry of everyday consumer products. Have you ever wondered what makes diet soda sweet, how hair dye works, what pro-vitamins are, what electrolytes in sports drinks are good for, or how detergent gets your clothes clean? This camp will answer those questions and many more! You will discover how to interpret the ingredients lists of your favorite foods and products while learning some basic chemistry. For example, in our tie-dye lab, you will learn the basics of drawing chemical structures, how to extract natural dyes, and the basics of chromatographic separations, while making a T-shirt to keep. The camp will also include discussions, brief lectures, reading about chemistry in the news, and inquiry-based activities. The goal is for campers to develop a deeper understanding of household products in a fun and safe environment. Classes are taught by distinguished Alfred University faculty who know how to make learning fun! The camp will culminate in student-led presentations of everyday chemistry.

In the evenings, students will have lots of fun participating in a variety of activities including indoor and outdoor games, movies, visits to a lake for picnics and campfires, hikes, social gatherings at the coffee house, a farewell party on the last night, and more. When not with faculty, campers are supervised by our wonderful team of Resident Assistants who serve as camp counselors, mentors, positive role models and friends. Housing is provided in secure university residence halls dedicated to summer campers. Delicious, all-you-can-eat, cafeteria-style meals are served in the campus dining hall. The $895 fee covers tuition, supervision, materials, room and board from dinner on the first day through lunch on the last day, and recreational activities.
