YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha

Directors: David Martin

Description: YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is an all boys YMCA residential camp that offers a dynamic combination of wilderness experiences and traditional in-camp activities. Located on 600 acres on the shores of beautiful Torch Lake, YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha has 105 years of tradition and experience to provide incredible adventures campers remember for a lifetime. Boys learn to work together, to support each other and to respect what each member of the cabin has to offer. The wonderful variety of camp trips reinforce the value of teamwork. Meet the challenge of extended canoeing and hiking trips to Michigans north country, the Canadian wilderness or biking the wooded hills of the Upper Peninsula, all the while learning to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. Trained and experienced staff lead our trip programs. The morning schedule allows campers to work together as a cabin unit. The time is also used to teach campers about the camping equipment, trip location and safety before their trips. Through this, a camper will develop an understanding of the individual responsibility each person has to the group. The afternoon allows each camper to individually select any one of the following activities: sailing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, archery, nature studies, soccer, ultimate frisbee, dodge ball, tennis, basketball, and newspaper. Discover SCUBA lessons are available for every camper. These are run separately from the SCUBA cabin, and allow kids to experience the joy of diving in a safe, fun environment. The first dive will be in a local pool, after which the campers have the opportunity to do an open water dive in Torch Lake! Our camp motto, Each for All...All for Each is evident in all we do. The cabin group is the essence of the camping experience. We emphasize Judeo-Christian values in our daily living and follow the four core values of the YMCA of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility in all that we do. The staffs are mature, dedicated young men, many of whom were campers themselves. Campers are assigned to a cabin of 6-8 campers with two leaders (one of whom is an international staff member). This allows for a favorable staff to camper ration resulting in maximum individual attention to campers.
