Summer Theatre at Alfred University, a 2-week program for students entering grades 10-12, provides opportunities to create, experience, and develop perspectives and skills in theater through full group sessions and with a good deal of individual attention from our distinguished faculty. Students work on improving skills and developing new levels of expertise in 2 or 3 areas of performance and/or technical theatre.

The program features actor training: including improvisation, text analysis, character development, staging, voice production and movement; technical theatre: including stage managing, scenery, costume and lighting; plus voice and voice development. Morning sessions focus on actor training. Afternoons are devoted to design and technical theatre along with voice and voice development, including some preparation for musical theatre. In the late afternoons students choose particular areas to work on: voice for the stage, acting, design, technical theater and/or stage managing. At least one field trip to a professional theatre is also included. The institute will conclude with a public performance of scenes and at least one rehearsed short play.

Students also have lots of fun participating in a variety of recreational activities including indoor and outdoor games, movies, visits to a nearby lake for picnics and campfires, hikes, social gatherings at the coffee house, a farewell party on the last night, and more. When not with faculty they are supervised by our wonderful team of Resident Assistants who serve as camp counselors, mentors, positive role models and friends. Housing is provided in secure university residence halls dedicated to summer campers. Cafeteria-style meals are served in the campus dining hall.

The $1,995 fee covers tuition, supervision, materials, field trip, room and board from dinner on the first day through lunch on the last day, and recreational activities. Juniors and seniors can earn two hours of college credit, if desired (see website for details).
