Wilderness canoeing adventures leave from our remote island basecamp and travel through the surrounding five million acres of North America's finest canoe country in a spirit honoring awareness, freedom, balance, and trust. We believe that our canoe trips are an excellent metaphor for life's journey and represent an important rite of passage into adulthood. Sessions include 2, 3.5 and 7 weeks programs for young men ages 10-17.

2 week program: Boys ages 10-12

3.5 and 7 week programs: Boys ages 10-17

Interview

What's the camp's philosophy?

Quite simply, we are committed to empowering young people to grow into the best version of themselves.

What would a camper most likely get from this camp?

Connection, Simplicity, Community and Balance. We believe in teaching young people how to be with the land, the water and the sky, how to be with one another, and ultimately how to be with themselves.

What sets your camp apart?

Northwaters adventures are designed to engage and empower young people at a given stage in adolescent development. Our intentional programing helps build creativity, community and confidence.

Do you have rituals in your camp? If so, can you tell us a little about the history of that?

Northwaters has many simple rituals designed to help young people connect most readily with the land and each other. We live simply relying on the land and each other, traveling traditional portage trails and canoe routes as the Teme-Augama Anishinaabi and many adventurers before us have.

What's your favorite part of the camp experience and why?

My favorite part is gathering with the community on the dock cheering in each trip as they return to base camp. The joy of achievement and community are palpable as we celebrate each person, and each section's stories.
