The 2024 Winston Prep New York Summer Program is an extension of the Winston Prep philosophy, principles, and model. It provides students, grades 4-12, the unique opportunity to participate in an individually designed program to enhance academic skills and foster independence.
The Summer Program also gives parents the flexibility to create an academic program specifically matched to the needs of their child. The program develops decoding and encoding, reading comprehension, critical-thinking skills, memory retrieval, executive functioning skills, written language expression, self-advocacy, mathematical computation, social pragmatics, time-management skills, test preparation, and expressive language skills within a nurturing, academic environment. The summer staff consists of reading specialists, special education instructors, and speech and language pathologists from Winston’s full-time faculty.

Students from fourth through twelfth grades from private, public, and parochial schools from New York City and abroad participate in the program. In the past, students from the Dalton School, the Brearley School, Friends Seminary, Collegiate School, Mary McDowell Friends School, St. Bernard’s School, Manhattan Country School, the Gateway School, Lycée Français de New York, United Nations International School, Trinity School, the Berkeley Carroll School, Stephen Gaynor School, Trevor Day School, West End Day School, Aaron School, Birch Wathen Lenox School, York Prep, and the Dwight School as well as students from Japan, China, Great Britain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, India, Australia, Singapore, Greece, South Korea, Guam, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Turkey, and Indonesia have all been enrolled in our summer program.
In the Morning Academic Program, students are enrolled in four academic classes each day–Literature & Writing, History, Science, and Math–from 9 am to 12:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, from June 28th to July 25th. Students are grouped by learning style and skill level in classes no larger than eight individuals in order to facilitate greater learning and maximize individualized instruction. During the last week of the program, parents will meet with each of their child’s teachers in a comprehensive 30-minute conference and will receive a detailed one-page progress report from each instructor.

From 12:45 pm to 2:15 pm, we offer optional 45-minute classes and activities. Students are given the opportunity to enroll in the July Focus Program—one-on-one instructional classes—or to engage in after-school activities or to participate in both. The July Focus Program can be taught in conjunction with morning academic classes or can be specifically tailored to target areas of greatest need.

After-school activities include Acting Workshop, Art, Chess, Cross Training, Digital Photography, Basketball, and Lego Building. Each activity meets twice per week.
An independent study program, SAT preparation course, or college preparatory class is also available. Focus classes can be taught in person or online. 

Students may also enroll in one-on-one Focus sessions during the August Program from July 29th until August 15th . Sessions and hours are flexible and schedules can be designed for either mornings or afternoons classes for these three weeks in August. Classes may also be scheduled to meet daily or twice weekly, Monday through Thursdays, for 45 or 90 minutes.

    Based on Winston Preparatory School’s innovative Focus Program, students participate in one-on-one sessions with a trained specialist to develop strategies to improve academic performance, strengthen targeted skills, and address areas of greatest challenge. The July Focus Program can be taught in conjunction with morning academic classes or can be specifically tailored to target areas of greatest need. 

    *Focus classes can be taught in person or online.
