Join the amazing coaching staff at the Nike XC Camp Deep South this summer.

Excellent training, educational breakouts and fun activities define this camp held at John Hunt Cross Country Park.

John Hunt Park is the largest park in Huntsville, and also the site of a well-known cross-country course. Located 3 miles south of downtown, the recently renovated park has numerous recreation facilities and is also home to the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum.

The cross-country course is located in the southern end of the park. The championship caliber cross-country course is a 10-meter wide, manicured grass surface course over rolling hills, with multiple spurred loops providing options for 2-mile, 5K, 6K, 8K, & 10K distances. There are five ponds and numerous mature and blooming trees.

The Nike Deep South XC Camp operates as a Day Camp Only, Campers should bring their own lunch each day - lunch will not be provided.

The Deep South XC Camp puts great emphasis on teaching runners the fundamentals, race strategy, smart training. The instruction is serious, the training is right for this time of the summer, and there are opportunities to make new friends and to have fun.

Nike Deep South XC Camp is open to High School runners, ages 13-17yrs.

2024 SESSION INFORMATION

Specific strength and mobility sessions to help teach our runners how to train their body to handle the mileage and how to avoid injury. Additional breakout topics include nutrition, prepping for your season, goal setting and race strategy planning.

CAMP DETAILS

INSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT & FACILITY

  • Ratio: 1:10 staff to camper ratio
  • Grouped by: age, ability and event
  • Evaluation: by coaching staff
  • Equipment Needed: Campers should bring at least one pair of broken in running shoes. Racing flats/spikes are optional. Please be sure to properly mark your equipment, so that it can be easily identified. Please review the Camp Information Packet for a detailed checklist of items to bring.
  • Facility: John Hunt Park/cross country course

SUPERVISION

The staff will provide supervision between camp check-in/check-out hours (7:00am - 3:00pm); there is no supervision provided outside of camp hours.

Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are strictly prohibited, and constitute, along with general misconduct, grounds for dismissal from camp without a refund.

HEALTH & RELEASE FORMS

All registered campers are required to have a parent or legal guardian fill out US Sports Camps’ mandatory Health & Release Forms online before arrival at camp. This camp does NOT require a doctor's signature on the forms.

CAMP INFORMATION PACKET

A detailed Camp Information Packet containing check-in location and address, on-site staff contact information, a checklist of things to bring, site-specific forms, and more will be emailed to all registered campers prior to camp. To check if your Camp Information Packet is ready, click here.

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is not provided. Campers are responsible for getting to and from camp on their own. There is no supervision before or after camp hours so please make arrangements to pick up your child on time.

Will Deep South XC Camp offer Overnight & Day Camp Options in 2022?

The 2022 Nike Deep South XC Camp is offering a Day Camp Only (Campers should bring their own lunch).

How are runners placed in their running groups?

Training groups are based on a combination of recent weekly mileage, pace per mile, and season best(s), as well as a campers geographic location.

A change in groups can be accommodated if staff members leading those groups feel it is needed.

What happens if it starts to rain during camp?

All campers receive their full running program each day weather permitting. In the threat of severe weather, we adjust our schedule for the outdoor training runs.

How and when will I receive my information packet with important camp details?

Well before the start of your camp (at least 3 weeks), you will receive a Information Packet which will include all the important details about camp: directions to camp, when to arrive, what to pack/ bring, camp contact information, and the Medical/Release forms, etc.

Does the Health & Release Form need to be signed by a doctor?

Our Health & Release Form does not require a doctor’s signature. This online form is required to be filled out accurately, signed by the parent (guardian), and completed online before your first day of camp.

Are the campers supervised throughout the camp?

Yes, campers are supervised by the coaches and staff, providing supervision during instruction, lunch breaks, and during training and group activities. All staff members complete criminal and sex offender background checks before working the camp.

Can I come to camp alone or do I have to be a member of a team?

Deep South XC Camp welcomes individual campers and teams. It's a great place to meet new friends who share your enthusiasm for XC and to have FUN!

Does Deep South have medical personnel on staff?

We have a certified athletic trainer on-staff.

How many miles will we run each day?

Campers will run 1x or 2x per day, depending on schedule. The morning run is more of a distance run and the afternoon session is an opportunity to work on specific training, drills, active rest activities, etc.

Actual distances vary based on runners mileage and ability.
