A leukemia camp provides support for children living with leukemia, along with parents and families, through awareness programs and recreational activities. The awareness programs are meant to educate them about this form of cancer through lessons about medical treatments and therapies in order for the children and their families to cope better with this disease. The recreational activities, meanwhile, serve as a diversion for the children and their families so that they can take their minds off the stresses brought about by leukemia.
Highlights: One of the highlights of this special needs camp is the opportunity to have a support group in the form of fellow cancer sufferers and their families. Through interactive programs, families will receive emotional support from other people who are going through a similar experience. Campers can enjoy boating, hiking, archery, swimming, arts and crafts, music, drama, dance and much more. Some even offer hot air balloon rides, canoe trips and team building activities.
What to Ask the Camp Director: Are all of the programs medically supervised? Is there is a pediatric oncologist available to provide the children with medical treatment as needed?
Medical Considerations: An important medical consideration for this type of camp is the availability of a doctor on the premises. Spending time from the hospital may make a child vulnerable to certain complications, so you will want a pediatric oncologist or oncology nurse to be present in the camp at all times.
