About Therapeutic Wilderness Camps and Programs
Therapeutic wilderness camp aims to guide children and teenagers in the everyday struggle of adolescence. These camps are set in forests or campgrounds to give the participants a back-to-nature experience while helping them cope with the confusing stage of adolescence. The programs in these camps teach positive values like self-reliance, confidence, responsibility and respect, and at the same time, help participants resolve issues whether personal or within the family, school or community.
Learning Skills: Since wilderness therapy programs are set in forests or campgrounds, a participant will be taught basic camping and outdoor survival skills that one can find practical in similar situations. A participant will also learn basic first aid training along with other fundamental skills associated with outdoor activities.
What to Pack: To prepare for wilderness therapy camps, pack basic camping gear and equipment including sleeping bag, flashlight, army knife and so on. Personal clothing and supplies are also necessary. One can also choose to bring a camera, video cam, book, board game or other items that can enhance the overall experience.
Special Counselor Considerations: A counselor for such camps should have background and experience in dealing with troubled children or teenagers, to be able to help the participants cope with personal, family or school struggles that they are experiencing.
