About Co-Educational Farm Camps and Programs
Kids can make new connections, enjoy nature and learn a thing or two about farming when they attend farm camp. These camps usually take place on a ranch, where students attend a summer session to learn how to handle horses and perform general ranch hand duties. Engaging in active outdoor skills, along with noncompetitive atmospheres, kids are encouraged to reach their full potential through farming activities like equestrian riding, how to milk a cow, how to round up sheep, how to lasso a cow and so on. Often set against the backdrop of a beautiful valley ranch or working farm, farm camps may be segregated for boys or girls within certain age ranges, such as 9 to 14.
What to Pack: Check the itinerary beforehand to determine what activities your child will be participating in, such as backpacking, canoeing and hiking. Send them with durable clothing tailored to what they'll be doing, such as riding gear for horseback riding.
Counselor Considerations: Attentive and well-trained staff should be fully licensed and certified to work with children in a farming capacity. A ranch camp should boast an excellent safety record, with a focus on giving campers individual attention as well as group instruction.
Weather Considerations: Most farm camps take place in the summer, either on a daily or weekly basis. Weather should be warm, so send your child in lightweight clothing, but also warmer clothing for evening activities.
