About Fencing Camps and Programs

Fencing camp may not be the most common of all summer camps, but it certainly one of the more interesting. There are a few summer camps that specialize in fencing while there are many others that offer it as part of the sports itinerary. Deciding between a camp that focuses specifically on fencing and one that offers it as part of its daily program may come down to how serious your camper is in learning this Olympic sport. Fencing camps are typically day camps, but during their time the campers will work on their overall fitness, footwork, technique, etiquette and more. Fencing summer camps offer campers a great experience to learn or improve their skills in this sport.

Equipment to Bring: Most fencing camps supply all the equipment, but if your camper already owns his own then he should certainly bring it. Long pants are mandatory as are non-marking sneakers.

Counselor Certifications: Before signing your camper up for fencing camp, inquire about the instructors' and counselors' certifications. They should be either advanced fencers themselves, or have been instructing for a long time.

Weather Considerations: Fencing is typically an indoor sport, so weather is not usually an issue. Footwork and techniques may be practiced outside, but bouts are held in gymnasium-type settings.
