An AIDS camp can help your children cope with having this disease, finding encouragement and hope through others in their same situation. These camps are designed to help kids cope with the daily challenges they face living with HIV and AIDS through getaways, programs and activities. The camps help not only the campers; they also help their parents and siblings by providing them with the much-needed support they need to further understand the disease and how to get over the hurdles they must face. One HIV camp may offer a several weeks' getaway in the woods. Another may involve just a weekend or week-long excursion. These camps may also offer support groups to help campers identify and deal with their feelings. Many camps sponsor family weekends when parents and siblings are welcome to participate in fun activities. Choose from week-long summer sessions or shorter family weekends, depending on your budget and needs.
Medical Considerations: All campers are responsible for bringing their own medication, but qualified nurses should be on staff to administer it and help in an emergency.
Highlights: Since the goal is to enjoy life, campers are offered a variety of fun recreational options to further their talents, such as performance arts and theatre.
What to Ask the Camp Director: Parents can ask if there are any support group activities designed specifically for them regarding their child's development or even financial challenges.
