Digging for dinosaur bones is a dream of many little boys or girls, so if your child shows an interest in prehistoric times, sign him up for archaeology camp. While some of these types of camps focus on the history of dinosaurs, there are many that concentrate on uncovering mysteries from humans' past. Whether you have a middle schooler or a high schooler, there are archaeology camps out there for your child who wants to know how we all got here. Native American history is a major focus of archaeology summer camps, especially in the Southwest region. Kids may learn about Native Americans such as ancestral Pueblo Indians of the Mesa Verde. They can assist professional archaeologists on an authentic excavation sites, identifying artifacts and cataloging them.
Learning Skills: Children will learn a specific skill set geared toward social studies and Western civilization, with many camps coupling academic learning with hands-on projects.
Highlights: Campers do lots of hands-on digging, along with trying out spear throwing, for example, or building a fire the old fashioned way.
What to Pack: Often held in national parks and nature preserves, archaeology camps require lots of outdoor activities. Dress your children appropriately, including shorts and tank tops for day and sweatshirts and jeans for night.
