Cancer camp is designed for children and teens who are bravely facing the battle against various forms of this disease. It provides an escape for kids who just want to be with others like them and have a fun time. They can take part in family weekends, summer camps and youth camps, all focused on boosting self esteem through recreation, respite and peer support programs. Some camps act as support groups, with clinical counselors on staff to speak with the children, meet in groups and individually, and discuss issues facing the youngsters and their families. Others focus instead on recreation, offering hiking, biking, swimming, games and more to youth between ages five and six to about 18. Many camps combine both. Attending oncology camp could be an important endeavor for your child, to let them know they're not alone.
What to Ask the Camp Director: Are siblings welcome? Many cancer camps welcome siblings along too, so they get the chance to be immersed in their brothers' and sisters' activities and meet other siblings facing the same challenges.
Medical Considerations: Qualified medical staff should be on hand to administer any medication your child needs during her stay. Keep in mind you will have to sign a release and permission form.
What to Pack: Pack any comfort items your child needs, plus any medication he requires for the duration.
