Medical camp can help your older teen prepare for a possible career in medicine. A pre med camp may be ideal for your college-bound child who craves exposure to technical training and real-world skills that a career in the medical field requires. These may be led by doctors and nurses at the top of their profession who can provide insight for campers through workshops, activities and hands-on exercises. For younger kids, there are junior medical camps designed toward elementary, middle and junior high kids. These fun programs can last one week or more, allowing children to conduct laboratory experiments, engage in workshops, learn CPR and first aid, and even conquer animal dissection.
Level of Expertise: Since medical camps are highly specialized in terms of age and ability, be sure to inquire about the age levels of your desired medical camp. They can range from the very basics for third graders to intermediate levels for junior high students to more intensive training for high schoolers.
Counselor Certifications: Instructors should be highly educated in the medical field, with many years of experience in their chosen specialty. Inquire about the specific schooling and experience of your child's instructor beforehand. Many are affiliated with the hospital or school in which the camp is taking place.
What to Ask the Camp Director: Are scholarships available? Some camps do award these, as the cost may be prohibitive for some families.
