Music Camp is an excellent opportunity for any young musician to improve his or her skills, both individually and as part of a group. Some camps are a bit exclusive and require an audition beforehand to get in. Others are open to everyone and have an audition once the camp has started, just to see which level of classes the student should be in depending on age and ability. In general, summer music camps are run by university music students and young music professionals. Sometimes students will get the chance to practice and work with well known orchestras and symphonies. There are music camps that also hold programs for specific genres of music, such as jazz, bluegrass and rock and roll.
What to Bring: Every camper is generally expected to bring his or her own musical instrument. This includes not only the instrument itself, but also any additional accessories such as a music stand, rosin (for a stringed instrument player) or a mute.
Learning Skills: At music camp, kids usually advance quite rapidly in technique, style and music reading, especially if the camp provides a lot of personalized instruction. The students learn better ways to go about learning new and/or complex pieces of music, as well as how to play in ensembles.
