Asperger's camp is geared to those with this autism spectrum disorder. Since kids afflicted with Asperger's typically have difficulties integrating into social situations due to repetitive patterns of behavior and limited ability to empathize with peers, Asperger's syndrome camp can address this and more by offering non-competitive camps geared toward children and teens with not just Asperger's, but also ADHD and the like. Camps focus on building and strengthening social skills through hands-on workshops, in addition to academic programs, sports and fun recreational activities. Kids from about age six to about age 18 can learn and play within a safe, nurturing atmosphere, but also one that is predictable, to keep campers happy and well adjusted.
What to Ask the Camp Director: What is the instructor-to-child ratio? In many camps it is 2 to 1, but this can vary.
KidsCamp Tip: While many Asperger's camps take in children on a spectrum in terms of disability, many will not accept those with severe behavioral problems, so be sure to check with staff before signing your child up.
What to Pack: Be sure to pack any comfort item your child may have an attachment to, to make the transition as smooth as possible.
