An atheist camp was designed for children of parents who hold a more naturalistic view of the world. This group includes atheists and agnostics, non-theistic skeptics, rationalists and freethinkers. This kind of camp's aim is to impart to children the philosophy and history of freethinking, which holds that opinions and claims must be based on reason, science and logic and not influenced by religion or dogma. While campers engage in usual camp activities like campfires, nature hikes and sports, emphasis is placed on learning critical thinking and the scientific method, with the goal being less about teaching children on how to be non-believers but more about providing an environment that is free from religious dogma, regardless of the belief the camper may or may not hold, so that tolerance may be promoted.
Highlights: The focus of an atheist camp lies in the encouragement of critical thinking. For instance, in one camp, a tradition has developed over the years where the story of two unicorns is told in each camp. Any camper who can provide proof that these unicorns do not exist will win a prize.
Learning Skills: Apart from science and logic, atheist camps also teach philosophy, evolution, astronomy and world religions.
