Diabetes camp can help kids cope with this disease, which affects more than 20 million people in this country, according to 2011 statistics from the American Diabetes Association. Many of those are children, trying to manage and live with it on a daily basis. Diabetes summer camp can integrate your child into a supportive environment where he or she can make new friends who also have diabetes. Qualified counselors work with kids one-on-one and in groups to help foster self esteem through individual and team-building exercises. Kids can learn all about appropriate diabetes self-management through healthy eating habits, plenty of exercise and just plain fun.
What to Pack: Since many diabetes camps offer outdoor activities like swimming and hiking, it's advisable to pack a variety of warm or cool clothing depending on the season, plus comfortable sneakers.
Counselor Certifications: Licensed medical staff members work one-on-one with each child on a daily basis to help take insulin levels, administer insulin if required and provide general medical information on diabetes management. Parents should be sure to inquire about the specific qualifications of medical staff for particular summer camps.
Safety: Safety of campers is ensured by trained staff, including counselors with diabetes and onsite medical teams. Campers are provided with tailored nutrition programs and glucose testing and monitoring for utmost safety.
