An LGBTQ camp is for children who are gay or those who are straight but belong to an LBGT family. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Sometimes, Q is added to stand for queer or those who are still questioning their sexual preference. In this type of camp, children are provided with a safe haven where they feel that belonging to any of the sexual orientations mentioned above is normal and nothing to be ashamed of. These camps also empower these children, build their self confidence and instill leadership skills.
Highlights: Different LGBT summer camps have varied activities. Some offer musical productions, from theater plays to Broadway performances. Some are centered on outdoor activities that may include hiking, camping, birdwatching, canoeing, kayaking and so on. Some focus on creative programs such as craft making, sculpting, painting and more.
Special Counselor Considerations: Counselors should not only have background in psychology, but also have experience in dealing with children who are either gay or who come from LGBT families.
Supervision: Strict supervision should be employed, particularly for an LGBT summer camp that offers outdoor activities. For example, if the camp provides opportunities for water sport recreation like jetskiing or swimming, trained and certified lifeguards should be present to supervise camp participants.
