Parents with children who have recently lost a loved one may consider enrolling them in bereavement camp. Bereavement camps are designed for children who have suffered the loss of a loved one at the hands of cancer, car accidents, war or murder. They often need help coping with these life-changing incidents, and bereavement camps could be part of the solution. Campers can partake in group therapy activities and counseling session activities to help them work through issues such as anger and grief. They can also play and have fun through programs involving music, art and outdoor recreation, to get them active and interacting with others in their situation.
Counselor Certifications: Bereavement camps should be facilitated by both grief professionals and trained volunteers, with many camps partnering with local grief counseling organizations and experts in the field.
Medical Considerations: If your child has a preexisting medical condition, or even if he is perfectly healthy, you will be asked to fill out and sign a medical form and health questionnaire. Be sure to send your child to summer or weekend camp with his regular medication if required.
What to Pack: Many campers are asked to bring a photo of their loved one, along with the proper warm or cool clothing specific to the climate. Some camps have cots or beds, while others don't, so be sure to pack a sleeping bag.
