If your child is having problems with lisps and stutters, pronunciation or other verbal difficulties, perhaps he or she could benefit from attending speech camp. These camps are specially designed for those with speech problems of all kinds. Kids attend speech therapy camps to learn not only the mechanics of speech but also the art of effective delivery, performance enhancement and public speaking. Some programs are sleep-away camps, while others are daily camps, with morning and afternoon sessions. Multiple campers from the same household often receive a discount, a big plus for parents struggling with one or more children facing speech problems. Specialized speech therapy camp classes may range from special occasion speaking to impromptu speaking. A large part of the programs focus on developing self confidence among peers and large audiences. Parents can expect to meet with the counselors beforehand to learn about the speech camp, along with what improvements they can expect to see in their children once the week is over.

What to Ask the Camp Director: Be sure to ask whether the camp is appropriate for your child's age. Many camps have age limits, although some invite children from preschool age and older.

Counselor Certifications: Campers should be led by qualified speech language pathologists and therapists who are licensed and certified.

Highlights: Kids get to engage in real-life scenarios such as theater performances or public speaking to gain self confidence.
